Substance Use and Pregnancy
​Certificate Program 

​This program provides evidence-based information on substance use and pregnancy and provides the framework to understand the short- and long-term effects of a variety of drugs on mother and child.  This certificate program supplements other professional training and provides an opportunity to develop an Action Plan and Poster Presentation to take back to an agency to strengthen opportunities for clients and their families.
 
This training is designed for treatment and other social services providers offering services for women with substance use disorders or those at risk.

Registration deadline: April 1, 2024
 
Upon successful completion of activities, participants will earn a Substance Use and Pregnancy Certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
 
Learning Objectives
By the end of the certificate program, participants will be able to:
  1. Define the underlying root causes of substance use during pregnancy.
  2. List the potential effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol, tobacco, opioids, stimulants (e.g., methamphetamine and cocaine), and cannabis on the pregnant person and fetus.
  3. Discuss the implications of the social determinants of health, including inequities in care, on the pregnant person, fetus, and infant.

You must complete the studies below before attending the live session. More information will be provided on how to do so once registered.
This program will be hosted on the learning platform Canvas. Once you register, it may take up to a business day to receive an invitation to the Canvas course and gain access to the materials

SELF STUDY: (11 Hours)
Complete view one video and complete the questions on the self-study feedback survey. (We will provide links to all resources upon registration)
  1. Guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics on the Treatment of Infants with  Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome
 
Complete reading assignments and the questions on the self-study feedback survey.
  1. They Will Never Forget How You Made Them Feel: Implementing Harm Reduction in the Perinatal Setting 
  2. Lessons Learned Serving Pregnant, Postpartum, and Parenting People with Substance Use Disorders in Massachusetts: The Moms Do Care Program
  3. Differential gateways, facilitators, and barriers to substance use disorder treatment for pregnant women and mothers: a scoping systematic review
  4. Strengthening the System Supporting Perinatal People with Substance Use Disorder in the Midwest Using Group Model Building

The Self-Study Feedback Survey is due April 19. ​

NOTE: The self-study must be completed prior to attending the live group sessions via Zoom on 9am – 1pm on May 2nd and May 3rd .  You will receive access to the link to the live sessions if the self-study is submitted on time.


LIVE WEBINARS (8 Hours): May 2nd and May 3rd 9am – 1pm Central Time
 
Participate in two 4-hour web-based training/sharing sessions. Examples of activities include:
  1. Discussions of completed course work with participants
  2. Expanded content on areas: Substance Use During Pregnancy
  3. Introduction to your course project: Action Plan
  4. Exploration of current gaps in services
 
ACTION PLAN DEVELOPMENT (10.5 Hours)
Develop a detailed Action Plan for your agency to address an aspect of substance use and pregnancy that will enhance services in your agency.  Ideas include screening for FASD in clients and making appropriate service modifications, providing education about NAS/NOW, enhancing education to clients about the effects of drugs on pregnancy, etc. This action plan will be due by May 20, 2024.
You will be required to present your action plan project on May 23, 2024 from 9am – 12pm or May 28 from 1pm-4pm Central Time.
 
POSTER PRESENTATION (10 hours)
Develop a poster presentation based off of the action plan. The poster will be due by June 4, 2024. You will be required to present your poster on May 31 2024 from 9am-12pm or June 4 1pm-4pm Central Time.

COURSE EVALUATION (.5 Hour)
Complete a post-training evaluation. An evaluation link will be provided to you once you complete the certificate. 
 

​This is a total of 40 Credit hours. In order to get credit for this course, all portions of the program must be completed. No partial credit will be given.
