Substance Use and Pregnancy
​Certificate Program 

​This program provides evidence-based information on substance use and pregnancy and provides the framework to understand the short- and long-term effects of a variety of drugs on mother and child.  This certificate program supplements other professional training and provides an opportunity to develop an Action Plan to take back to an agency to strengthen opportunities for clients and their families.
 
This training is designed for treatment and other social services providers offering services for women with substance use disorders or those at risk.
 
Upon successful completion of activities, participants will earn a Substance Use and Pregnancy Certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
 
Learning Objectives
By the end of the certificate program, participants will be able to:
  1. List the potential effects on the fetus of prenatal exposure to alcohol, tobacco, opioids, methamphetamine and marijuana.
  2. Define neonatal abstinence syndrome/neonatal opioid withdrawal and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
  3. Explain the diagnostic criteria for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
  4. Describe pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for neonatal abstinence syndrome/neonatal opioid withdrawal.
  5. Discuss changes in the maternal brain attributed to substance use.
  6. Design an agency-specific action plan to address an aspect of substance use during pregnancy.
 
To receive full credit in the course, participants will complete the following activities:
 

Format: Self-study/activity (11 hours); Web-based training (8 hours); Action Plan (10.5 hours); Evaluation (.5 hour)

SELF STUDY: (11 Hours)

Complete online courses/videos and self-study feedback survey. (We will provide links to all resources upon registration)

  3. Supporting Your Collaborative When Planning for Safe Care for Infants with Prenatal Substance Exposure Webinar
 
Complete reading assignments and the questions on the self-study feedback survey.

  1. Developmental Consequences of Fetal Exposure to Drugs: What we Know and  What we Still Must Learn (2015, Neuropsychopharmacology, 40(1), 61-87). 
  2. Stimulant Use in Pregnancy: An Under-Recognized Epidemic Among Pregnant Women (2019, Clin Obstet Gynecol, 62, 168-184). 
  3. Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (2020, Pediatrics, 146(5)). 
  4. Parenting and Addiction: Neurobiological Insights (2017, Current Opinion in Psychology, 15:55-60). 

Prior to attending the live group sessions via Zoom on February 22 and 23, 2022, the self-study survey must be completed.  The Self-Study Feedback Survey is due Tuesday, February 8th at 5 pm CST. ​

LIVE WEBINARS (8 Hours)
 
Participate in two 4-hour web-based training/sharing sessions. Examples of activities include:
  1. Round table discussions of completed course work led by participants
  2. Expanded content on areas: Substance Use During Pregnancy
  3. Introduction to your course project: Action Plan
  4. Exploration of current gaps in services
 
ACTION PLAN DEVELOPMENT (10.5 Hours)
 
Develop a detailed Action Plan for your agency to address an aspect of substance use and pregnancy that will enhance services in your agency.  Ideas include screening for FASD in clients and making appropriate service modifications, providing education about NAS/NOW, enhancing education to clients about the effects of drugs on pregnancy, etc. This action plan will be due on or before April 22, 2022. 

To earn certificate of completion, you will be required to present your action plan project on June 9th, 2022.

 
COURSE EVALUATION (.5 Hour)
 
Complete a post-training evaluation. An evaluation link will provided to you once you complete the certificate.
