FASD Training of Trainers
Certificate Program
Alcohol use during pregnancy is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities. Despite increased awareness/education, many women of childbearing age, including pregnant women, drink and binge drink alcohol (>3 drinks per occasion).
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is the umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that can occur due to prenatal alcohol exposure including physical, cognitive, behavioral and/or social deficits. Not intended as a clinical diagnosis, the term represents medical conditions associated with prenatal alcohol exposure including fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), partial FAS, alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND), alcohol-related birth defects, and neurodevelopmental disorder associated with prenatal alcohol exposure (ND-PAE). Many medical, allied health care providers, educators, and others work with individuals affected by prenatal alcohol exposure—diagnosed or undiagnosed—but may lack training to identify, refer, and/or provide effective services. Few agencies offer FASD training to address these important issues. This Training of Trainers (TOT) helps decrease the knowledge gap by providing training on FASD along with the tools and resources needed for participants to provide quality training to diverse audiences. These tools and resources include an adaptable PowerPoint presentation, peer-reviewed journal articles to support your training, fact sheets, and other handouts to provide to your participants. This blended course includes 12 hours of self-study prior to 12 hours of live, web-based training (two 4-hour training sessions and one 4-hour participant presentation and feedback session). To complete the certificate, each participant will develop their own 15-minute FASD talk for a particular audience (i.e., nurses, youth justice workers, teachers, social workers, women’s treatment providers, etc.) and present it to their training cohort during the final live training. Upon successful completion of activities, participants will earn a FASD Trainer Certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. WisconsinCONNNECT staff will provide training, materials, and technical support throughout training. Participants will have access to a certificate materials webpage on the WisconsinCONNECT website to access all training materials, handouts and PowerPoint presentations. Learning Objectives: By the end of the program, participants will be able to
